I first heard about Smashburger over on LouBou’s blog last year, when she reviewed it after its opening in Milton Keynes. Since then I’ve always been interested in trying it however as it’s located a little more out of the way than my usual dining spots (Kingston rather than the centre MK) I’ve only just gotten round to going.
Yesterday was my Dads birthday so to celebrate he chose to go for dinner at Smashburger. Now thank goodness I didn’t decide to dress up because when we arrived it was clear we hadn’t even needed to bother booking a table. This place is like a posher version of Burger King and not what I was expecting at all. I wrongly assumed that Smashburger was a proper restaurant restaurant but it’s actually more of a fast food place, think Five Guys. They do bring your food out to you so I guess it could be classed as table service, but it’s definitely more of a casual ‘let’s grab a quick bite to eat after work’ type of place than a ‘let’s go out for dinner’ type of place. Had I of known what it was going to be like beforehand I obviously wouldn’t have been so surprised/ dissapointed with the venue but it was my error to not research more about the location prior to our visit.
Let’s talk about the food, everyone loves a burger right? You can’t really go wrong with a burger but I can’t say I was too impressed with mine. I ordered the classic Smashburger which came with cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickles and smash sauce. Being a fussy eater I asked for them to take out the tomato, pickles and sauce which was fine however it did mean my food came out a little later than everyone else’s plus they also forgot to put in the onion! That didn’t bother me too much but in an ideal world I ordered the onion, I should have got the onion.
To go with my burger I ordered the smashfries, which are skinny chips flavoured with Italian olive oil, rosemary and garlic. As I usually just order plain, basic fries when I go out for dinner, I was excited to try something different. I wish I hadn’t bothered. These chips were too flavoursome. I swear it was all flavour, no fry. I wasn’t keen and to make matters worse the grease was unbelievable. Those chips were drowning in oil. It actually made me feel dirty to look at them thinking about how greasy they were. Like if I even touched one I would need to wash my hands about five times afterwards. Not pleasant.
Another thing that dissapointed me about my visit to Smashburger was the fact that although we had pre-booked a table for one of the upstairs booths, upon our arrival we were told this table wouldn’t be available for us. Bare in mind it wasn’t busy at all and we had specifically booked in advance it was pretty bizarre that for no reason explained to us whatsoever we weren’t able to sit there. Then after about ten minutes of being seated they came over and told us we could sit upstairs after all but by then we were settled so we declined.
In my opinion I just feel like Smashburger is too inbetweeny. It’s not as casual or cheap as a fast food restaurant like McDonald’s but it’s not as atmospheric, filling or nice as as a proper sit down to eat restaurant like TGI Fridays or Frankie and Bennys. I just don’t get it. For me I’d rather go for one or the other, not something in between.
Personally I’m in no rush to revisit Smashburger, I don’t get it’s vibe at all and the food really wasn’t that tasty however I am definitely glad I tried it to say I’ve been. If you like Five Guys then you’d like Smashburger but other than that I wouldn’t really recommend it. Stick to McDonalds instead!
